Corrosion

It is a myth that the copper coating protects the wire from corrosion during storage or use. On the contrary, under the influence of humidity, the difference in electro-chemical potential between wire and copper layer can promote the formation of rust at micro defects in the copper coating.

The figure above shows the wire surface after 6 days of unprotected exposure at 80% relative humidity and 26.6ºC (79.8ºF). No corrosion spots are visible on the OK AristoRod™ wire surface, while the first small corrosion spots appear on the copper coated wire surface. The figure below shows the result after 14 days. The first spots now also appear on the OK AristoRod™ surface, while the copper coated wire shows advanced pitting corrosion.
